Safety put in top priority

Vespa Philippines, a member of the Autohub Group of companies, invited Vespa riders and special guests to its first Safety Riding & Gathering event, held last May 20 at the Megatent in Libis. The event is intended to gather Vespa enthusiasts, or Vespisti, for a day of camaraderie.

Also held at the venue was a Safety Riding course led by instructor Charles Nolasco, an experienced instructor in scooter and superbike racing. Free of charge for those present, the course taught riders how to control their scooters in various situations, from slalom courses, roundabouts, figure 8’s, U-turns, and sudden emergency stops.

Each stage of the safety riding course was designed to simulate a typical scenario on the street, be it lane-splitting, navigating a roundabout, maneuvering in tight spaces or emergency braking. Extra protection like elbow pads, knee pads, and spare helmets were provided. In addition, two Vespas were provided for the course, Vespa Philippines’ latest Sprint (150cc) and S (125cc) models, both equipped with i-get (Italian Green Technology) engines.

At the end of the day, participants were given certificates, certifying they had passed the Safety Riding Course. Vespa Philippines’ free safety riding course is timely as President Duterte recently cited the worsening lack of discipline among riders and the rising number of motorcycle related accidents as a result.
