Yamaha updates Tracer 900 with tech

Just a day before the gates of EICMA in Milan, Italy opened, Yamaha took the covers off from what they claim as the “most sophisticated Sport Tourer ever manufactured by the company”.

Tracer 9 GT+

The new Tracer 9 GT+ still packs the same potent 890cc 3-cylinder “CP3” engine as the previous Tracer 900. Where it differs is on the technology side. According to Yamaha, the “+” on the Tracer’s badge means that this bike is packed with a range of best-in-class technology that is designed to transform every ride by providing a previously unimaginable degree of versatility and control.

Radar technology

For instance, the Tracer 9 GT+ is the first Yamaha motorcycle to be equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with the help of radar. With the new 4-mode ACC system, an inbuilt millimeter wave radar constantly measures the distance from the vehicle immediately ahead of the Tracer 9 GT+. The ACC automatically controls cruising speed, deceleration, and acceleration to suit the road situation as it evolves.

Additionally, the ACC also features a cornering assist, whereby the system automatically limits the speed increase when the system detects that the motorcycle is going through a corner and if the radar detects a vehicle ahead of the corner.

The Tracer 9 GT+’s ACC is also linked to the engine and electronic suspension, where it automatically adjusts engine speed to maintain a pre-selected distance when cruising, and at the same time adjusts suspension damping to reduce excess pitching when brakes are applied to maintain chassis stability.

‘Radar-guided brakes’

Another first for Yamaha on the Tracer 9 GT+ is the integration of its millimeter radar into the bike’s unified braking system (UBS).

According to Yamaha, there are three main elements to the radar-linked UBS that operate only when the BC (Brake Control) is turned ON. First, brake assist intervenes when the system detects that a collision is imminent. Second, front and rear brake assistance adjusts braking forces to both wheels for stable deceleration. And third, the cornering brake control automatically adjusts braking force to inhibit tire slippage when the machine is leaned over.

Take note, however, that the system provides additional braking assistance and will only intervene when the BC is turned ON and the rider is braking – it is NOT a collision avoidance system.
