The 2018 Yamaha YZ450F is an all-new dirt bike from the ground up — now with a compact electric starter and ultralight, four-cell lithium-ion battery. With a new frame, new engine, and revised suspension settings, it also comes with a high-tech feature that makes it the world’s first Wi-Fi equipped dirt bike that can be tuned track-side with an Apple or Android smartphone app.
Yamaha’s Power Tuner app gives riders and race teams the unique ability to tune the YZ450F’s ECU — allowing changes to be instantly uploaded to the motorcycle’s onboard CAN-bus network through a Wi-Fi control unit. Adjustable settings include air-fuel mixture and ignition timing, while system diagnosis allows for closer monitoring for maintenance. Information can also be tracked with a log feature — storing data such as rpm, engine temperature, throttle position, and more. The records can then be shared.
The YZ450F gets a brand new, liquid-cooled DOHC 449cc thumper — fuel-injected and four-stroke with 4 titanium valves and a 44mm Mikuni throttle body. Its rearward-slanted cylinder design has been updated with a lighter cylinder head angled more vertically. The intact tract has been lengthened and straightened, cam profiles are more aggressive, and the bridge-box piston design achieves higher compression. Transmission and clutch have also been updated to increase durability.
A new aluminum bilateral beam frame utilizes an upper bracing to improve rigidity and revised engine mounts for centralizing mass, on the YZ450F. Narrower bodywork allows for better knee grip, sheds some weight, and accommodates an updated seat for better rider movement above the machine. Suspension is fully adjustable, handled by a KYB mono shock in the rear and KYB Speed-Sensitive System inverted front forks. Hydraulic discs measure 270 mm in the front and 245 mm out back, while the bike rides on Dunlop MX3S tires wrapped around a 21-inch front wheel and a 19-inch rear.
The handlebar mounts of the YZ450F are adjustable with 4 positions, with incorporated rubber for vibration reduction. The handlebars themselves are aluminum, tapered, and 55 mm wide with a quick-adjust clutch perch. Seat height is at a high 980 mm (38.6 in). With a fuel capacity of 6L, the YZ450F weighs wet at 111 kg.
The YZ450F will roll out for some markets as soon as July and will be available in two color schemes: Team Yamaha Blue and White. MSRP is stated at $9,199 USD.
