Freshman senator wants establishments to provide free parking for seniors, customers and PWDs

Freshman senator and TV host, Raffy Tulfo, has recently proposed a law that will give senior citizens, as well as Persons with Disabilities (PWD) free parking in most establishments across the country.

Under Senate Bill (SB) 1920 or the Free Parking Act, senior citizens, PWDs, and validated customers will be given free parking privileges in commercial establishments to “recognize their contributions to society, and to make their shopping experience more convenient and accessible.

Limited to 3 hours

If SB 1920 becomes law, senior citizens – those who are 60 years old and above, as well as PWDs, upon presenting their valid senior citizen and PWD IDs, will have the privilege to enjoy FREE 3-hour parking in establishments like malls, supermarkets, or similar businesses that provides goods or services for sale to the public.

That said, open car parks that do not provide goods and services that are for sale to the public are not covered by this act.

Additionally, SB 1920 also seeks to give customers who have a valid purchase (validated customer) within the commercial establishment of at least PHP 500 will be given the free 3-hour parking privilege.

The commercial establishments that will be covered by this act, should it become a law, will have to designate parking spaces for seniors, PDWs, as well as their validated customers and these spaces must be clearly marked and as close as possible to the entrance of the establishment.
