Last January, we published our Yamaha Sight 115 Review, riding it in and around Metro Manila and the best fuel economy we got was 55.3 kilometers per liter. To be honest, I was skeptical of achieving more than 100 kilometers per liter fuel economy myself and did not bother to work hard to attain such a high figure, considering my riding habits.
When our friends from Yamaha Motor Philippines invited us for the Yamaha Sight SAFE Run Legazpi City, I became really excited to try out and challenge myself to take the Sight 115 beyond 100 kilometers with just 1-liter of gasoline.
The SAFE Run, conceived by veteran rider, Francis Rivera, of Adventure Team Philippines, has a simple goal: to find out how efficient your motorcycle is. It is not a race, it also does not mean that the slower you go, the better your results. The rider has to find the 'sweet spot' of the motorcycle to run it at its most efficient state.
There were more than 30 contestants, each of them owners of a Sight 115 who were also eager to achieve their personal bests. The route was also straightforward: start from the Motortrade Yamaha 3S Shop in Legazpi City, then proceed 25.6 kilometers to a Petron gas station in Tabaco City. Ride another 61.1 kilometers for the 2nd checkpoint at the Motortrade Yamaha 3S Shop in Iriga City. For the finish line, we just back-tracked the same route, with the 3rd and final checkpoint back at the Petron gas station in Tabaco City. The cut-off time was 12:30 PM, or five hours after the flag off.
After much effort of maintaining speeds of no more than 40 kilometers per hour on the highways, I am now a believer that the Yamaha Sight can indeed travel for more than 100 kilometers per liter. I achieved a personal record of 112.26 kilometers per liter fuel efficiency.
Miguel Ocinar (pictured in main photo), on the other hand, was crowned as the champion of the Yamaha Sight 115 SAFE Run Legazpi City after besting everyone with a record-breaking 147.46 kilometers per liter result, dethroning the previous record of 133 kilometers per liter set in Mindanao a few months ago.
Scrutineers from Adventure Team Philippines monitored fuel refilling to make sure that the measurements were accurate.
When asked what his secret was in achieving that figure, this 18-year-old from Legazpi City just said: “huwag lang ibirit” (do not twist the throttle abruptly). He also added that for his size and weight, he found out that his Yamaha Sight 115's sweet spot (optimal rpm and speed), was between 40 to 50 kilometers per hour only. He also took home the PhP15,000 cash prize, a portion of which he will donate to the church.
The next Yamaha Sight SAFE Run will be held at Naga City, Camarines Sur this coming May 19 and the finals will be still in Naga City on May 26. The Yamaha Sight 115 is currently being offered with a special down payment promo of only PhP 1,290 at your nearest Yamaha Rev Zone.
