Last Saturday, October 9, actor Jake Cuenca and the police engaged in a wild car chase from Mandaluyong to Pasig City. According to reports, Cuenca hit one of the unmarked cars used by the police shortly after a buy-bust operation. The policemen were in plain clothes.

After the collission, Cuenca sped away, prompting the police to give chase. It appears Cuenca didn't immediately stop, and that’s when the police fired upon Cuenca’s tires to disable his vehicle.

Unfortunately for one Grab rider in the vicinity, a stray bullet hit him. He was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital and is recovering. PNP chief, Guillermo Eleazar, has assured the rider that all his medical expenses as well as lost income due to the incident will be shouldered by the PNP.

“I would like to apologize to the Grab driver who was hit by a stray bullet in this incident. I would like to assure you and your family that we will take care of all the medical expenses of your hospitalization and we shall also extend financial assistance that will also cover the period of your recovery,” says Gen. Eleazar.

Police involved now in restrictive custody

According to Gen. Eleazar, a thorough investigation is already in place, focusing on the appropriateness of using firearms to disable a civilian vehicle. Also, the general added that the police officers involved are now under restrictive custody, until the internal affairs investigation is through.

“We assure the public that disciplinary measures will be imposed on the personnel involved and corrective measures will be implemented in order to prevent the repeat of this incident,” added Eleazar.
