MMDA may soon set up tents at gas stations as rain shelter for motorcycle riders

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has met with operators of gasoline stations to discuss the possibility of setting up tents at filling stations for the use of motorcycle riders as temporary shelters during heavy rains.

2 years ago, the MMDA started designating the spaces under flyovers along major thoroughfares as temporary rain shelters for motorcycle riders who are caught in a heavy downpour. The objective is to discourage motorcycle riders from seeking temporary shelter under an overpass, which is dangerous and oftentimes causes traffic.

The objective is the same under this proposal by the MMDA: to discourage motorcycle riders from stopping underneath an overpass and to keep them safe from oncoming vehicles.

However, the agency has to address the considerations and restrictions raised during their meeting. “Gasoline station operators have asked us to submit our proposal and guidelines on the use of the tents to address safety and operational concerns,” said Artes.
