Earlier this year, Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) teased the impending arrival of the PCX160 maxi-scooter. We were fortunate enough to test the unit at the Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) and provide our first impressions. Unfortunately, the unit was not yet available in dealers at the time. Now, it has finally arrived.
As the name implies, the all-new PCX160 now has a larger engine. It’s powered by a 4-stroke, 157cc, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, single overhead cam (SOHC) engine with Honda’s Enhanced Smart Power+ (ESP+). This gives it 16 PS at 8,500 rpm and 14.7 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. It’s paired with a CVT transmission for fully automatic operation.
Combined with the Idling Stop System (ISS) to avoid wasteful fuel consumption, Honda claims it’s capable of a achieving an average fuel consumption of 45.1 Km/L. Paired with a new 8-liter fuel tank, that adds up to longer rides in between stops for fuel.
Engine aside, the new PCX also comes with a number of upgrades like new LED head- and taillights for a fresher look; a hazard lamp switch, wider tubeless tires; twin shock rear suspension; and a new, fully-digital meter panel.
Honda has also thrown in comfort features like a secured front pocket that can hold a 1.7 liter bottle. It also has a USB-type power outlet for convenient gadget charging. Under the seat is a 30-liter utility box to store personal items. Finally, the bike comes with a smart key with an anti-theft alarm, and an answer-back system. This keyless system provides better security and decreases the likelihood of theft.
As for safety, the PCX160 offers riders two variants depending on their brake preference. The PCX comes with a Combi-Brake System (CBS) variant that can brake both front and rear wheels with one lever, or the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) variant that prevents wheel lock-up. The ABS variant also comes with Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), which regulates wheel traction whether during sudden braking or in slippery road conditions.
The CBS variant comes in Matte Dim Gray Metallic and the Pearl Fadeless White, with an introductory price of PhP115,900.
The ABS variant comes in Asteroid Black Metallic and Pearl Fadeless White, with an introductory price PhP133,900.
"At Honda Philippines, we share the same love for motorcycles as Filipinos do. The all-new PCX160 will not only embody our love for motorcycles but will also take motorcycle riding in the country to the next level," HPI President Susumu Mitsuishi said.
The PCX160 is now available at all authorized Honda dealers nationwide.
