Hot-rodding the entry-level

After 6 decades of continuous production with relatively little cosmetic change, Harley-Davidson finally introduces an all-new Sportster. This new model is designed around the 1,250cc Revolution Max engine that also powers Milwaukee’s first adventure bike – the Pan America 1250.

Is it a bobber, tracker, or both?

According to Harley, the new Sportster S is inspired by classic bobber motorcycles, while the tail section, high-mount exhaust, and slim solo seat draw inspiration from the Harley-Davidson XR750 flat tracker.

The overall styling also revolves around the Sportster S’s massive engine, which is “an expression of the motorcycle’s raw power,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson VP of styling and design.

“Pan America cruiser”

As mentioned above, the new Harley-Davidson Sportster S is powered by the same engine found in the Pan America 1250 – which is a first in the Sportster’s 64 years of production history. Until this year, the engine remained relatively unchanged.

To improve weight and riding characteristics, the engineers of Harley-Davidson have made the engine a stressed member of the frame, while the torque delivery is tuned to be as flat as possible across the entire rev range.

Electronics

The new Sportster S also boasts of an assortment of electronic features that are fast becoming standard in cruiser motorcycles. Besides 3 riding modes that are pre-programmed (Rain, Road and Sport), there are an additional 2 riding modes that the rider can customize to their preference.

Additionally, the new Sportster S also features cornering riding aids, ABS, and traction control.

The rider benefits from all-LED lighting, and a 4-inch TFT screen that can be connected to a smartphone to manage calls, music, and even navigation.
